It’s a nature park in Bukit Batok’s Guilin district. Ex-granite-quarry turned into park It resembles Guilin’s granite rock formations. Xiao Guilin in Chinese (Chinese: ).
It is located in Bukit Batok planning area, which includes Bukit Gombak, Hong Kah, Brickworks, and Hillview. The park was a Gombak norite quarry. Bukit Batok, meaning “coughing hills”, was named after quarrying sounds.
It shut down Bukit Batok quarries to mine granite below sea level and imported it from Indonesia. A mini-lake resulted from the abandonment of the quarry. In 1984, the HDB planned to fill and road over the quarry. With its rugged granite outcrops and lush green hills, the HDB decided to turn the existing quarry into a park. They added granite blocks to retaining walls, footpaths, lighting, and seating to make it more accessible. The granite formations in the park are reminiscent of Guilin’s mountains in Guangxi Province.
In 1996, the Urban Redevelopment Authority connected the Town Park and Nature Parks to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Sungei Pandan to improve the residential landscape.
Bukit Batok East Avenue 5 is 5 minutes walk from Bukit Gombak MRT station. The park has been used for Chinese opera, dance, music, and exercise. Tourists in Singapore may want to consider it as well.
The park is said to be haunted by the spirits of quarry workers and lake drowners.
